UNVEIL in Nigeria: Strengthening VET for the Web 4.0 Era
Nigeria’s fast-growing youth population presents enormous economic potential. However, persistent digital skills gaps and outdated vocational training methodologies continue to limit access to quality employment. Addressing these gaps requires modernising Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems and strengthening educator capacity.
Through the UNVEIL project, co-funded by the European Union, Emerging Communities (EC) is co-transforming Nigeria’s VET ecosystem.
Nigeria’s VET institutions face:
- Limited exposure to emerging digital competencies
- Gaps in industry-aligned curriculum
- Uneven digital infrastructure
- Low female participation in technical fields
UNVEIL addresses these challenges by equipping educators with practical, inclusive, and context-adapted training methodologies. Emerging Communities has conducted several polls, focus groups conversations, convening Nigerian VET educators and skills development stakeholders and some of the key insights included:
- Strong demand for hands-on, practice-based learning
- Need for contextualised Web 4.0 concepts relevant to Nigeria’s economy
- Interest in blended (digital + physical) delivery models
- Emphasis on increasing female participation and inclusive practices
With major milestones completed, Nigeria now moves into the implementation phase of work package 4 (WP4), where physical workshops will be delivered in subsequent quarters, followed by post-training assessments and documentation of lessons learned. These outcomes will contribute to the broader UNVEIL e-toolkit, enabling replication and adaptation across partner countries.
